    I'm trying to do a setup similar to the one from ELASTIK plug-in (http://www.michael-hutchinson.com/downloads/index.php). Its an awesome plug-in, but unfortunately it's last version is for Maya 8.0. I wonder why he didn't update it...

    I'm using Maya 2009 and I would like to know how to setup two features from ELASTIK manually:

    * Adjustable smooth stretch
    * Interactive elbow/knee manipulation

    Does anybody know a tutorial about this or could post something about it?? Thanks

    I keep on bugging Michael to talk to Autodesk about his plugin (he sits right next to me at work)

    As far as the smooth stretch, you can do it with a distance node. you can start scaling the joints when the distance is (say) 95% of the original distance. (or something like that)

    Interactive elbow/knee manipulation I don't remember how that worked.. :S

    you can have a smooth ( damp ) stretching-behaviour ( without plugin ) , if you replace the "if distance is greater than initialArmLength - condition -> then strech" by implenting an animCurve ( setDrivenKeys ) ... it is a bit tricky , but it then works completely without any plugin .

    maybe you want to check out this python-plugin , which seems to work similar to the plugin michael hutchinson wrote . ( but i think it is not so complex and powerful than michael's plugin )

    I talked to Michael about his solution and it's a fairly complex one. But it gives very smooth results

    I think it would be pretty hard to replicate that (but you can do something similar with a curve binding (setDrivenKey))

    Hey Javier, it would be lovely if you bother Michael a little longer so he releases an update on the elastik plugin for at least Maya 2008 ^_^ If he's too busy, I'm sure some people at CGTalk would love to compile the source code. I still have Maya 7 at work (the tech guys at work are a joke!) so I'll give it a try. Elastik looks awesome from some videos I watched!

    I'll slap him at the back of the head.

    I keep on telling him he should talk to Autodesk and sell it to them...

    Didn't have much time but loaded the files Michael has on his site, played with them a little bit and I was blown away! Such a nice plugin. Autodesk is on a rampage to buy anything they can lately... maybe Michael can get lucky.

    Thanks to both for bothering Michael about his wonderful Elastik plugin. Hope Autodesk realizes they need new features like this one to improve Maya. The next version better have some new stuff on it or it'll be the end of Maya.

    We've written an internal solver that works very similar to the ElasticIK, full damping and stretch control in a new plugin It's based on the simpleIK code that ships in the dev kit for Maya. We actually submitted the source code for this back to Autodesk with the hope of them integrating it into the core. We'll see what happens

    Hey guys i am from New Zealand I am also looking for the elastIK plugin source, as a matter of fact i know 3 other riggers that are also looking for it , i actually talked to Michael on the phone a week ago to beg for him to release the source code , he said he has some legal issues to resolve, and he wishes to make it open source soon, if someone knows Micheal please ask him to at least release one of his solvers source, Mark J if u can also give us some help that would be great.

    Michael sits next to me. I ask him about it from time to time.

    There is just a legal issue with DreamWorks and his code that he is trying to clear.
    Basically, he just needs to get approval from DreamWorks to make his code available. It shouldn't be a problem since he wrote it before he started working here. But even then. It should be cleared just in case. Definitely don't want to get in trouble for something like this.

    I believe he is talking to them about getting it all sorted.

    yeah it should be ok not sure how it works on US but here in New Zealand if i don't develop a plugin or script in-house them is not the company property it is mine, but them there are contracts that says otherwise, i really hope he releases it soon the CG community will thank him forever i don't speak just on my behalf. and if he needs compile versions for linux, windows 32 and 64 i will be glad to provide it, and yeah for sure i will be making a donation to Micheal every month his brilliant work certainly deserves it, ask him to put a donation link on his website.

    Thanks

    Yeah, it's a bit more complicated than that, but it's in the works.

    Things are moving along.
