Hey everyone, I'm trying to implement auto snapping for space switching, I wrote up a script that handles the snapping with a shelf button press but I'd like to automate it. It would be really convenient if there is a way to have a script execute on the change of a custom attribute. I've been looking through documentation and searches, but haven't found a way to do that yet. ScriptJob looked the most promising, but I didn't see a way to connect the scriptJob to trigger when an attribute on a node was changed.

I love trying to figure this stuff out, but I'm at a loss right now. Is there any way to set up a script to execute when an attribute on a specific node is changed? Or would I be better off breaking the script down into pieces and using the expression editor to watch for the change and make the changes attribute by attribute instead of all together in a script? Or maybe I'm going about this entirely wrong? ;P

Thanks in advance for any suggestions on this!

Hi all,

I'm a noob to Maya.

I need to rig a dummy controller that control 3 joints in hierarchy, where joint1 is the grandparent and joint3 is the grandchild. When I rotate the controller 30 degrees, joint1 will rotate 30 degrees, joint2 20 degrees, joint3 10 degrees, just like a finger rig.

How do I setup this in Maya?

Thanks in advance,

Hey guys! First of all, I love this site! And I'd like to be very active. So to start off, I thought I post an interactive post. No pressure for anyone to comment. There's no production thats about to fail if my post remains unanswered. This is STRICTLY for fun.

I found a way to animate blendshape weight maps without using plugins. It's not full proof. But it works.

It's in youtube and my site.

http://redesigndavid.me/4561/2010/08/08/animate-blendshapes-weights-per-vertex/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEZ7MMJF9QQ

Check them out and see if you could figure it out. I will post a tutorial in two weeks time.

The technique would be applicable to more than just weights for blendshapes. It might even be possible to control weights for skinCluster joints. Some other possible applications would be blendshapes the way Eddie Murphy turned into nutty professor.

Thanks everyone!!!! :) Hope to hear from you!

Plugin developed in C++, still in beta testing.
It allows to express directly the three mathematic formulas that drive the new position of each point of the geometry: x' = Fx(), y'=Fy(), z'=Fz().

Parameters that you can express for each formula:

x,y,z=the previous position of each point
index=the point index
t=additional external parameter (useful to let the deformer be animatable).

Supported functions:

sin, cos, tan, abs, ceil, sqrt, pow, exp, log and so on.

Critiques and comments are welcome.

Hi,
I am writing a plugin for the calculus of the autorotation of a wheel based on differential calculus instead the classical way.
I have created a custom locator named rollLocator.

It works fine if I call the MEL command: createNode rollLocator

But if I try to create the node via C++ using the MDGModifier class or the MDagModifier, in this way:

MObject rollLocatorObj = dagMod.createNode("rollLocator", MObject::kNullObj, &status);

OR

MObject rollLocatorObj = dagMod.createNode(RollLocator::typeId, MObject::kNullObj, &status);

I get the following runtime error:

Plugin error: (kInvalidParameter): Object is incompatible with this method

Any ideas how to solve the problem or reference this new locator alternatively in C++?

Thank you

Hi,

I've been looking into the idea of skinning a skeleton to a low poly mesh and then attaching this to a high poly mesh via a wrap deformer, to save time on weight painting and improve on realtime performance.

Is this still a viable workflow and still used today?

Also, do people still use influence objects now we have Maya muscle?

Hi there,

When I saw X Men, I was really amazed when I saw morphing the lady (Mystique). Couple of days ago I found a video which some how demonstrate this stuff (here is the link of the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Upg7lA28VWQ&feature=player_embedded).

And today I found another video (here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opmLasBCbaE), quite of same, he/she used Sampler deformer to make this happen. What Sampler Deformer is? Can I found it anywhere?

Can anybody help me how to achieve this effects??

Thanks in advance,

Manish

Hi, I'm always a little confused about joint orientation. I read some books and articles about it, but still cannot fully understand it. Sometimes people said it should be X down the joint, Z rotating towards the front. And some said orient joints with Y down the joint, Z sideways.

Can someone elaborate a little bit more about joint orientation?
Does twist axis and roll axis means the same?

thx!

Do you guys know where to look for rigging internships?

I've been looking at a few studio's websites and I couldn't find anything...
There's always animation, concept art and story internships, but no rigging.
Is there a different name for such a position?

Also... what is a good book/tutorial to start learning mel and mel for rigging?

This forum is awesome! I've been reading tons of posts :)
Thanks!

Now, before I begin, I realize the immediate answer to the question I'm about to ask is "the more, the better", but I was hoping to get some general advice on what I should focus on learning next, therefor...

I'm curious what rigging technique's are required from entry level applicant, as well as highly desirable skill-sets?

I've created an eye controler using aim constraint on the eyeballs... But I'm having trouble figuring out what to parent it to. If I parent it to the head, Shoulder or Cog controls, the eye controler will be bouncing around with the animation, and you'd get wild eyes, but if you parent it to the World control, the character will leave the eye controler behind. Any advice?

Hey everyone. My first post here, I'm just getting into rigging though, so I'll probably be posting here quite a bit from now on.

SO... I have a locator, and a sphere in my scene. I'm trying to write an expression that will make the sphere constantly travel towards the locator. And depending on the distance between the locator and the sphere, the speed at which the sphere is traveling will change.

So, when the sphere is really close to the locater, it will very slowly creep towards the locator. But when the locator is moved far away the speed of the sphere will ramp up, until it hits a max speed.

Hope this isn't too complicated. I've been toying around for hours trying to get it to work.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

hi guys.. I am a noob when it comes to rigging. Just getting into the basics of rigging now.
Currently i am facing a problem with mirroring the skin weights after painting them one one side of the model.
I have checked if the model is aligned properly to the grid.. and its aligned perfectly with the axes. I am attaching the images here.

This is the side i painted the weights to.
http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=yzy4n2nmmz5

This is what happens after the mirroring the weights.
http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=0f2nh5jtxmh
